This classic Campari cocktail is a European tradition and a simple pleasure. The Negroni is mixed with equal parts gin, sweet vermouth and campari, poored over ice in a tumbler and garnished with orange peel. Sometimes the simplest things in life are the best.
A popular apéritif and digestif, the Negroni is a favourite amongst cocktail bartenders in Melbourne’s best restaurants.
Cutler & Co, Fitzroy
While waiting to be seated at a table for dinner at Melbourne’s Cutler & Co, the bartender displayed his tricks of the trade as he mixed a Negroni in front of me. Rubbing the orange peel around the rim of the glass, he then gave one single stroke of an open flame from a lighter across the peel, releasing the strong orange scent with a simultaneous light flame. Carefully rolling the orange peel, he then placed it in the cocktail.
