There are very few consistencies in life, but one thing you can always count on is the hospitality of the Greeks. When they welcome you in, they accept you as part of the family.
Opened in the 1970’s, Salona is a third generation family business located in Richmond. The restaurant and bar serves Hellenic food and drink in the traditional style. Eat and drink upstairs, downstairs or al fresco.
While the bar is located upstairs from the cosy little Greek restaurant, it’s far from separated from the kitchen. In the Greek culture it’s rude to drink without food, so the cocktail menu is designed around the custom of pairing food and drink. Plus the kitchen and the bar work together to create many of the ingredients used in the cocktails, including syrups, infusions, macerations, preserves and special garnishes.
With a focus on organic ingredients and as much of it sourced as locally as possible, some of the produce comes out of the personal gardens of family and friends, and the bar sources premium Australian craft spirits.
But not everything is local. Owners Stavros and Alex travel to Greece every year for inspiration. Salona’s bar upstairs is designed to resemble the bars on the beaches in Greece. Plus both the cocktail bar and kitchen update their menus seasonally in line with whatever Alex & Stavros discover is on trend in the Greek Islands.
I enjoyed the simplicity of the styling with the hanging bottles adding a touch of drama. The crisp, clean, white and blue colours, the white mosaic tiles and the chalkboard cocktail menu. And mixed housey tunes by Greek DJ’s add to the Mykonos vibe.
Salona’s is for progressive eating, drinking and chatting with friends perched on stools around the rectangular bar.
Salona has three lists of cocktails: Salona signatures, classics and their seasonal menu. The staff will help you food match with indulgent treats from the kitchen.
Getting their inspiration directly from the famous Alemagou Beach Bar Restaurant in Mykonos, the team have given this sweet and fruity cocktail an Australian twist.

Fascinating flavours come together with Tsipouro, a pomace brandy from Greece.

Mint and dark rum give this espresso martini a richness that makes it the perfect dessert accompaniment.
